Dim Sum in Encino — Hong Kong-Style Dim Sum on Your Side of the Valley

Encino sits at one of the San Fernando Valley’s most comfortable addresses; tree-lined streets, upscale dining, and residents who know the difference between a good restaurant and a great one. Which is exactly why so many Encino families have made the short drive east to Shanghai Rose in Studio City their go-to for dim sum.

We’re on Ventura Blvd,  the same boulevard that runs straight through Encino, about 15 minutes east in Studio City. Same road, better dim sum. Hong Kong-trained chefs, fresh preparation through dinner service, seven days a week. No compromises, no shortcuts.

Why Encino Diners Drive to Shanghai Rose

Encino is a neighbourhood with high dining standards, and dim sum in the western Valley has historically meant a long drive to the San Gabriel Valley or settling for something that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Shanghai Rose changes that equation. We’re the closest full-service, Hong Kong-calibre dim sum restaurant to Encino,  and we’re on Ventura, a road you already know.

  • 100% Hong Kong-trained kitchen staff — the real Cantonese and Shanghai tradition
  • Dim sum served all day, every day — lunch and dinner, 11:30 AM through close
  • Open kitchen — watch the chefs work while you wait for your table
  • Full à la carte menu alongside dim sum — Shanghai entrées, wok dishes, seafood
  • Private dining for family celebrations, milestone dinners, and corporate events
  • Happy hour Mon–Fri, 3–6 PM — a neighbourhood favourite for Valley professionals
  • Free parking — ample street and lot parking on Ventura Blvd in Studio City

Encino has a significant community of diners who grew up with dim sum, families with ties to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China who know exactly what they’re looking for in a dumpling wrapper, a bun, or a plate of cheung fun. We’ve earned the trust of those diners, and it’s a trust we take seriously.

The Dim Sum Menu: What to Order from Encino

Our kitchen produces dim sum from scratch every morning. By the time you’re seated, the har gow wrappers have been rolled by hand, the char siu filling has been prepared in-house, and the egg tarts are ready to come out of the oven. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to every service, every day.

The Classics — Order These First

  • Har Gow — hand-formed shrimp dumplings in translucent wrappers; the definitive test of a dim sum kitchen
  • Siu Mai — open-top pork and shrimp dumplings, steamed to order; a table staple
  • Cheung Fun — silky rice noodle rolls with your choice of shrimp, beef, or BBQ pork
  • Char Siu Bao — BBQ pork buns available baked (honey-glazed, slightly sweet) or steamed (pillowy soft)
  • Lo Bak Go (Turnip Cake) — pan-fried until the outside is golden and crispy, soft inside

The Signatures — Go Beyond the Basics

  • Egg Tarts — warm egg custard in a flaky pastry shell; always ordered fresh
  • Crispy Calamari — lightly battered, stir-fried with scallion, garlic, black pepper, and chilli
  • Minced Chicken Lettuce Cups — Shanghai-style, topped with crispy vermicelli
  • Seafood Pan-Fried Noodles — golden crispy noodles topped with shrimp, scallops, and mixed vegetables in a rich sauce
  • Szechuan Beef — wok-tossed with aromatic chilies, garlic, and Szechuan peppercorn

For the Whole Table

  • Shanghai Rose’s menu is designed for sharing. Order liberally across the dim sum selection and supplement with a Shanghai entrée or two. Peking Duck, whole steamed fish, and wok-fried lobster are all available for tables looking to make an evening of it. We’ll help you build the right spread for your group size.

Encino Family Gatherings & Private Dining

Shanghai Rose is a natural home for the kind of large, multi-generational family dinners that Encino families do well. Grandparents, parents, teenagers, kid;  dim sum is one of the few dining formats where everyone eats well and together, ordering what they want as it comes out of the kitchen.

For milestone events; birthdays, anniversaries, reunion dinners,  we offer private dining space with customisable menus. Talk to us about your event and we’ll put together the right package. Call (818) 762-2542 to discuss availability.

Encino Dim Sum FAQ

Is Shanghai Rose the closest dim sum restaurant to Encino?

For the quality level Encino diners expect, yes. Shanghai Rose in Studio City,  about 12–18 minutes east on Ventura Blvd,  is the nearest restaurant offering authentic, Hong Kong-calibre dim sum with a full service menu. Encino itself has limited dim sum options; most are significantly further in the San Gabriel Valley.

Yes, every single day. Our full dim sum menu runs from 11:30 AM through close — 9:30 PM on weekdays, 10 PM on Friday through Sunday. This is one of the biggest differences between Shanghai Rose and most dim sum restaurants, which typically stop service by early afternoon.

Reservations are strongly recommended for parties of 4 or more, and for weekend visits. We suggest booking at least a day in advance for weekends. Call us at (818) 762-2542. Walk-ins are welcome on weekdays based on availability.

Order widely. Dim sum is designed for sharing, so don’t overthink individual portions. For a table of 6–8, aim for 10–14 different dishes across the steamed, baked, fried, and noodle categories, then supplement with one or two Shanghai entrées. Your server will help you pace the ordering so dishes keep coming without overwhelming the table.

Yes, takeout is available on all menu items. Free delivery is offered on orders of $30 or more. Given the distance from Encino to Studio City, takeout pickup may be the most convenient option. Call (818) 762-2542 to place your order.

Dim sum is naturally one of the most child-friendly formats in Chinese cuisine; buns, dumplings, and egg tarts are almost universally loved by younger diners. There’s no dedicated kids’ menu, but the variety of dim sum means children always find things they enjoy. We’re a comfortable, relaxed environment for families.

Traditional. Our kitchen is staffed by Hong Kong-trained chefs who follow authentic Cantonese and Shanghai technique. We use the same methods, ingredients, and preparations you’d find in a quality Hong Kong dim sum house. We’re not making fusion dim sum or adapting to a lighter palate. If you grew up with the real thing or you’ve eaten in Hong Kong, you’ll recognise what we’re serving.
